Where to Hang Out as a Queer Woman in Manhattan: West Village, Chelsea and NoHo

Where queer New York began, and where it still gathers.

Updated October 2026

Brooklyn gets a lot of the attention now, but Manhattan's West Village is where modern queer New York began, and it is still where many of the city's queer institutions live. This guide walks the West Village, Chelsea and NoHo with queer women and nonbinary folks in mind. For the wider map of groups and spaces across the city, see our guide to queer community in NYC.

This is also 10th Muses territory: the social club for queer and lesbian women, trans and nonbinary folks, 30+, has hosted its Cocktails & Connections socials in NoHo. Check the current calendar for upcoming gatherings; joining is free.

The West Village

Start on Christopher Street. The Stonewall Inn, site of the 1969 uprising, and Christopher Park across the street are part of the Stonewall National Monument. A few blocks away are two West Village institutions: Cubbyhole on West 12th Street, a long-running lesbian bar, and Henrietta Hudson on Hudson Street, which describes itself as a queer human bar built by dykes.

For a different kind of night, Marie's Crisis on Grove Street is the piano bar where the whole room sings, and The Duplex on Christopher Street has cabaret upstairs and a piano bar below.

The LGBT Community Center

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center on West 13th Street runs groups, workshops and events; check its calendar for current programs. If you are new to the city or newly out, it is one of the best first stops in Manhattan.

Chelsea

Chelsea's gallery district, mostly between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues in the West 20s, is free to wander and makes an easy afternoon or date. Books of Wonder, a children's bookstore on West 17th Street, is nearby if you are shopping for the kids in your life.

NoHo and around

NoHo, between the Village and SoHo, is compact and walkable, with cocktail bars and restaurants that suit an after-work drink. 10th Muses has hosted its Cocktails & Connections socials here. A few minutes east, the East Village has more queer and women-owned cafés and bars; south in SoHo is McNally Jackson, an independent bookstore.

Between socials, the Manhattan group in the 10th Muses WhatsApp community is where members share neighborhood tips and plan meetups, a simple way for sapphic newcomers and longtime downtown dykes alike to find their people.
