Queer Women's Neighborhood Guide to Park Slope: Bars, Bookstores and Community

Brooklyn's long-time sapphic heart, block by block.

Updated October 2026

For decades Park Slope has been one of the places queer women in New York have chosen to live, raise families and open businesses, and it still carries that history in its bars, bookstores and institutions. Whether you have just moved here or have lived here for years, this guide maps the queer side of the neighborhood. For the wider picture across the city, see our guide to queer community in NYC.

And a welcome to the neighborhood from 10th Muses, a New York community for sapphic and lesbian women, trans and nonbinary folks, 30+. The Brooklyn group in our WhatsApp community is the easiest way to find people nearby, and the current events calendar lists upcoming gatherings.

The bars on Fifth Avenue

Fifth Avenue is where Park Slope goes out. Ginger's is the neighborhood lesbian bar, relaxed and familiar. Good Judy is an LGBTQ+ bar a short walk along the avenue, and Sandy Jack's is further south, which makes it easy to start somewhere quiet and end somewhere livelier.

Books and history

Community Bookstore on Seventh Avenue has been open since 1971. The Ripped Bodice, the romance-only bookstore that is woman- and queer-owned, is on Fifth Avenue at the north end of the neighborhood.

Park Slope is also home to the Lesbian Herstory Archives, a collection of materials by and about lesbians. Check its schedule for open hours and events before visiting.

Cafés, wine and the park

Principles GI Coffee House on Ninth Street is a neighborhood coffee stop. And everything in Park Slope leads to Prospect Park, the neighborhood's shared backyard for runs, picnics and long walks.

Making the neighborhood your own

Pick a bar for a weeknight and go more than once; regulars are made, not born. Join a bookstore event or club. And look beyond the neighborhood for community too: the Brooklyn Community Pride Center in Crown Heights runs programs for LGBTQ+ Brooklynites.

If you want to meet other dykes, queer women and nonbinary neighbors without waiting to become a regular, join 10th Muses for free and say hello in the Introductions group; the member directory has a map view that shows who is nearby.
